Here is what the Atsugi-Zama Toastmasters Club members say about Toastmasters and our club:
I joined the Atsugi-Zama Toastmasters Club four months ago. There are several reasons why I wanted to join Toastmasters. First, I wanted more chances to speak English. In my job, I often read and write English but do not listen and speak so often. Second, my English school teacher, who is American, recommended me to join since he knows that Toastmasters is a place that gives us a different educational chance from that of typical English schools in Japan. Finally, the member due is reasonable :-). I joined the Atsugi-Zama club, because it is the nearest Toastmasters club from my apartment.
Since I have joined, I have just finished one prepared speech project. But I experienced many other activities in the Toastmasters meeting, by taking roles such as table topic speaker, table topic master, timer and vote counter. Since all meetings are held in English, I think all activities in the club are very good opportunities to improve my English. In addition to learning communication, leadership, and English, another advantage I have found in joining Toastmasters is to get to know interesting people with different backgrounds, in a wide range of age and experience.

I've been a Toastmaster for about 7 years and learned not only speech skills or English proficiency but how to get composed while making public speeches. Believe it or not, TM activities offer very wide range of opportunities to polish ourselves.
I must admit that my 1st. visit to A-Z TMC was not very enjoyable because of my poor command of English and preparing for making speeches was a heavy load sometimes. But I felt I was on the right track to be a good English speaker with great help of my fellow members and very elaborate TM manuals.
Now I'm sure toastmastering is really worth it. You may be wavering on joining a TM club considering your English level. Please don't be afraid of knocking the door of our club.

Toastmasters is centered on the Toastmasters club meetings. Each meeting has several educational sessions. There are many opportunities to improve your leadership and public speaking skills. The most important session is the
Prepared Speech Session, where club members give prepared speeches. For example, here is a speech given at the Atsugi-Zama Toastmasters club:
Other participants give detailed evaluations of those speeches, to help speakers improve their skills. For example, here is a speech evaluation given at the club:
Prepared speeches and evaluations follow the
Toastmasters International educational programs and manuals. Participants also vote for the Best Speaker and the Best Evaluator of every meeting.
Other sessions during a meeting include the
Table Topics Session, where participants are asked to give impromptu speeches on topics selected by the Table Topics Master of the day, or the
Joke Master Session, where one speaker attempts to make the audience laugh, to warm up the audience at the beginning of the meeting.
You can also develop your
Leadership Skills in practice, by taking
roles in club meetings: Table Topics Master, Timer (all speeches are timed), Speech Evaluator, Toastmaster of the Day (to organize and manage a meeting), Vote Counter, etc. or by taking one of the
club officer roles: President, Vice-President Education, Vice-President Membership, Vice-President Public Relations, Secretary, Treasurer, and Sergeant-at-Arms.

Hello there.
Thank you so much for showing interest in our club. The Atsugi-Zama toastmasters club, established in 1970, is a club with historical significance in Japan (District 76). We're going to have our 40th anniversary in 2010. We started at U.S. Army Base, Camp Zama, and meet at Sagami Women's University today.
As with other clubs, Atsugi-Zama toastmasters club has a friendly, supportive, and enjoyable atmosphere. Our special feature is that members are remarkably active when it comes to developing their public speaking and leadership skills. Relatively new members learn from experienced members. And experienced members not only reveal advanced techniques in their presentations but also learn from new members' fresh perspectives, for example life, job, etc.
Why would you want to join a Toastmasters club?

トーストマスターズクラブとは？
トーストマスターズクラブとは非営利の教育団体で、会員がお互いに助言しあいながらプログラムを通じて、コミュニケーション技術を学び、またクラブ内での活動の中での役割を通して、メンバーのリーダーシップスキルを養うのを目的としています。トーストマスターズクラブは、１９２４年にアメリカ、カリフォルニア州に誕生しました。現在アメリカ、カナダ等の 英語圏を中心に、世界の約106ヶ国 に12000以上のクラブがあり、約23万人以上の会員がいます。日本では現在、日本語クラブも含めて約90以上のクラブがあり、1800人以上の会員がいます。
厚木座間トーストマスターズクラブの歴史と特徴
厚木座間トーストマスターズクラブは、1970年５月１日にアメリカ人のTM Herb Venable によって米軍基地内で創立された古い歴史を持つクラブです。当初は、ネイティブ中心のクラブでしたが、次第に日本人のメンバーも増え、現在はメンバーの一人である、大学教授のパーキンスさんのご厚意でミーティングは相模女子大学内で行っています。

定例会の内容
ミーティングはすべて英語で行われています。それぞれの役割は公平に割り当てられます。Table Topics の参加者以外の予定はすべて事前に知らされます。
- Joke Session
Joke Masterが２つ～３つのJokeを用意し発表します。とても会場の雰囲気が和みます。 - Table Topic Session
Table Topic Masterが出席しているメンバーに、今話題になっている出来事等から質問します。参加者は１分から２分半の範囲で答えます。即興のスピーチの練習です。 - Prepared Speech Session
指名された人がスピーチをします。通常３~４人のスピーカーがいます。米国から送られてきたマニュアルにそって事前に用意をして、スピーチをします。自然にスピーチの能力が向上していきます。 - Evaluation Session
スピーチの論評をします。それぞれのスピーチに対して、論評者がマニュアルを基に論評の仕方を学びます。トーストマスターズクラブには先生がいませんので、お互いにフィードバックを行い、良かった点、改善すべき点を相手に伝え、温かく相手を励ます練習です。 - Award Presentation
テーブルトピック、スピーチ、エヴァリュエーションの終了後に、メンバーの投票によりそれぞれベストスピーカーを表彰します。当クラブでは、それ以外にベストパフォーマンス賞がありミーティングで良いパフォーマンスをした人に与えられます。
そのほか司会者、計時係、文法等の間違いを指摘する係、などがあり順番に役割をこなすことで、自然にコミュニケーション能力や、クラブの役（President, Vice President Education, Vice President Membership, Vice President Public Relations, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant At Arms,等）に就くことで自然に 、 リーダーシップスキルが身に付きます。

厚木座間トーストマスターズクラブは、今年で設立40周年になります。米国では設立50周年以上のクラブも珍しくありませんが、国内では歴史のあるクラブに属します。
当会は、長い歴史を持つが故に、新しい仲間をお迎えすることの大切さを良く理解しています。クラブの歴史と特徴のところで触れております様に、多様性を維持することが活き活きとした活動に不可欠だからです。
